After reading Archbishop Pell's speech on marriage I bought a book "Intimate Relationships, Marriages and Families" by F. Philip Rice (3rd edition, 1996). I have read the first couple of chapters, which have lots on the statistics of how marriage has changed. Last night I looked on www.abs.gov.au and have made a two links to some of their information. They are fairly depressing statistics.

Next Wednesday I have an essay due for "The Early Church", writing about the problems they had. A few months ago I read a book by a sociologist who writes about religion: Rodney Stark. I think that will be one of my main references. I remember that he wrote about the costs and benefits of Christianity. It will be interesting to revisit and see how it applies with changes in marriage.
