The Vox Clara letter 2 May 2002

There is more information on the Vox Clara committee from thetablet.co.uk and cathtelecom.com.

The comittee consists of:

Archbishop George Pell of Sydney chairman (Australia)

Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb of Mobile vice-chairman (USA)

Cardinal Francis George OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, (USA)

Archbishop Justin Rigali of St Louis, (USA)

Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans, (USA)

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, UK

Archbishop Oswald Gracias of Agra (India),

Archbishop Kelvin Felix of Castries (Santa Lucia),

Archbishop Peter Swasi Sarpong of Kumasi (Ghana),

Bishop Philip Boyce OCD of Raphoe (Ireland),

Bishop Colin Campbell of Antigonish (Canada)

Bishop Rolando Tirona OCD of Malolos (Philippines)

Their role seems to be to assist the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments with the approval of English translations. Its an important role, and the need for it is illustrated by the following.

Communion can be given by intinction, the priest dipping the consecrated host into the Precious Blood in the chalice. Should the priest hold the chalice, or not?

No, 1975 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), n. 246(a)

Yes, 2000 GIRM 287 (although this contradicted 2000 GIRM 191, saying the acolyte holds the chalice). Published according to the decree of 20 April 2000. Picture of the Latin text about the decree

No, 2002 GIRM 287, published 22 March 2002 with the decree of 20 April 2000. Picture of Decree

Yes, "Norms for the Celebration
and Reception of Holy Communion
Under Both Kinds in the Dioceses
of the United States of America" n. 49 approved by decree of 22 March 2002.

That the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments have decreed these "All things to the contrary notwithstanding" highlights its need for assistance with liturgical translations and other areas.

I was a seminarian in Melbourne for 18 months while George Pell was Archbishop of Melbourne. I believe he will make an excellent contribution as Vox Clara chairman. It is an important task in difficult circumstances.
