Vatican Meeting

On 21 October 2003 there will be a meeting at the Vatican with Presidents of English speaking bishop's conferences and the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Catholic News Service reports it is to "discuss and clarify questions about the translation of liturgical texts".

Hopefully it will result in better mechanisms for the translation of liturgical books. Major liturgical books published in Latin, but without approved English translations are:

1984 Ceremonial of Bishops
2001 Roman Martyrology
2002 Roman Missal

In Australia there is not yet an approved translation of the 1984 Book of Blessings, although there is one for the United States of America.

Cardinal Medina Estevez's approach was to write letters about the problems of slow translations. Hopefully Cardinal Arinze's approach of a meeting will be more successful.

Another change at the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is that there is a new secretary. On 2 August 2003 Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino replaced Archbishop Tamburrino.
