Communion Ministers289. In Mass with a deacon, he "assists the priest in
giving communion to the people" (IG 182). 290. "Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion" are instituted Acolytes, the faithful commissioned according to the prescribed rite, and members of the faithful commissioned by the priest for the occasion (IG 162). The priest may call upon them to assist him if other priests are not available and there is a great number of communicants. They do not approach the altar until the priest has received communion.
